Atoms drop Fall opener
Atoms show heart, and fatigue in Philly Derby III

September 1, 2017

Glenside, PA The Philadelphia Atoms launched their 2017 Fall campaign at home on Friday, September 1st against the ASL Spring Champion Philadelphia Fury in the third edition of the ASL's Philly Derby. The Atoms, under a new manager who was installed less than three weeks ago, were arguably the better side for the opening quarter hour as they impressively peppered the Fury. Attacking on the counter from a 3-4-3 alignment, the Atoms accounted for five quality shots which led to a 1:0 lead on a goal by Nick Morris.

However, the young Philly expansion team reverted back to their spring form by not being able to hold a lead for more than five minutes. In that time, the Fury took quick advantage of two separate breakdowns along the Atoms' right side by scoring each time sending the teams to a 1:2 halftime.

In the second half, the Atoms clearly had heart, but not the legs as fitness took its toll. Physical fatigue led to mental fatigue when the Atoms absorbed a 45-minute barrage by the better conditioned Fury. But training aside, Atoms GK Ike Onyendor made a few tremendous saves while the back-three of Rob Stone, Tim DiBisceglie and newcomer Federico Diaz did all they could do to calm the storm.

The experienced Fury, who threw up to eight attackers at a time into the final third, found the back of the net twice more, once again taking advantage of the Atoms' right side. The hosts eventually wore down as midfielders defended deeper and did not test the Fury GK in the final 45. But not for the lack of effort, the Atoms played with heart to the final whistle.

There is no rest for the weary as the two sides meet again with a difficult 46-hour turnaround on Sunday, September 3rd at 5pm on the Fury's Rowan University pitch.
